Art is all about perception. What appeals to you. What speaks to you. What matches the colors in your couch - just kidding!
There is something about the immediacy of 3D art or installation art that grabs my attention. It may be that it is transitory or that it appears in places where you wouldn't expect to find such amazing creativity.
This art challenges the question of what art is and what it does.
It catches you and makes you focus on something outside yourself, to see the world in a new way.
That is the function of art.
DALE CHIHULY
Glass
Everything about Dale Chihuly is over the top. He is the world's preeminent glass sculptor, a genius by any standard. I have been fortunate to see several of his installations, one right here in Phoenix at the Desert Botanical Gardens. His website is image rich. You will love it.
Both of these glass sculptures appeared in Phoenix. Use the links above for more information and images of more glass sculpture by this extraordinary man.
ANDY GOLDSWORTHY
Nature
Andy Goldsworthy lives and works in England. He creates in collaboration with nature, first manipulating the elements nearby, then photographing them. Some works last only minutes, others are part of the landscape. "....if it is snowing, I work in snow, at leaf-fall, it will be leaves". And so forth. After photographing the works, they become the transient bits of nature once again.
I own every book published by and about this artist, and hope you will explore his works and enjoy his vision as much as I do.
Jeffrey Nishinaka
Paper Sculptor
"Paper to me is a living, breathing thing that has a life of its own. I just try to redirect that energy into something that feels animated and alive."
A native of Los Angeles, Ca., his career has spanned almost 30 years and includes Coca Cola, Bloomingdales and Sprint among his commercial clients.
His "Ah Ha" moment came when he was combining fashion drawing and graphic design with a new medium, paper. You can find him here.
